Couverture lestée tressée : l'efficacité derrière le style

Weighted braided blanket: efficiency behind style

Durée : 7 min

We've all scrolled Instagram at 11 PM, half-asleep, stumbling upon those dreamy chunky knit blankets. You know, those thick knits that make you want to drop everything and roll up in them with a cup of tea. Beautiful. Cozy. Instantly Instagrammable.

But here's the real question no one asks: do they actually help you sleep better? Or are they just a decorative item that looks heavy but does nothing concrete for your sleep?

The too-pretty-to-be-effective blanket syndrome

In recent years, chunky knit blankets have flooded our feeds and home decor stores. These thick-knit blankets, hand-knitted with kilos of XXL wool, are everywhere. We love them for their ultra-cozy feel. But let's be honest: when you pay €150 for 3 kilos of merino wool, you're mostly buying style.

Because there's a world of difference between a blanket that looks heavy and a weighted blanket that deeply affects your body.

Most chunky knit blankets weigh between 2 and 4 kg for a gigantic surface of 120x150 cm. Do the math: about 1.5 kg/m². It's pretty. It's cozy. But it's far, far from the ratio needed to activate the famous deep pressure that truly calms your nervous system.

What science says (and what no one tells you)

We won't lie to you: weighted blankets have been the subject of serious studies for years. The Karolinska Institute in Stockholm published research in 2020 on 120 patients suffering from insomnia. The result? 92% of weighted blanket users were in remission after 12 months. Not bad, right?

But beware, there's a crucial detail everyone forgets: it's not the raw weight that matters, it's the density per square meter. It's exactly like spreading butter on toast. If you spread 10g of butter on an entire baguette, you won't taste anything. But if you concentrate it on a single slice, then it has flavor.

It's the same with a weighted blanket, and that's what we understood at Napoon. After several tests and studies, we determined that the therapeutic efficacy zone is between 3.1 and 4.6 kg/m². Below that? Placebo effect. Above that? Crushing sensation.

And guess what? Most chunky knit blankets you see everywhere don't exceed 2 kg/m². They're too big, too spread out, too... decorative.

When the beads move, sleep suffers

Let's talk frankly about what you're not told about classic beaded weighted blankets. Because yes, some chunky knit blankets exist in a weighted version, filled with glass or plastic micro-beads. It seems like the perfect combo: style + therapeutic weight.

Except that in real life, these beads have a major flaw: they move. And when they move, everything falls apart.

Plastic poly-pellets, in particular, make noise with every movement. Not a lot, but enough to bother light sleepers or those with sensory hypersensitivities. Glass micro-beads are quieter but clump together over time. The result: heavier areas on one side, empty areas on the other, and pressure that becomes completely random.

And when the weight shifts, the therapeutic effectiveness disappears.

The ideal weighted blanket should be quiet. Immobile. Stable. Like a hug that doesn't move. That's exactly why we created Napoon differently.

Why we made the opposite choice at Napoon

We'll be upfront: we could have done like everyone else. Created beautiful chunky knit blankets, filled them with beads. It would have been simpler.

But we wanted something more eco-friendly and that really works. Not just a decorative item that weighs a lot.

So we worked with doctors and therapists to define a kg/m² ratio that truly activates deep pressure stimulation. We found our sweet spot: between 3.1 and 4.6 kg/m². Not by chance. By science.

Then, we made a radical choice: zero beads. Neither plastic nor glass. The weight comes solely from the braiding of Oeko-Tex® cotton, inside and out. It's longer to produce. It's technically more complicated. But it eliminates all the problems of classic blankets:

  • Zero weight displacement
  • Zero noise
  • Zero microplastics in your bed
  • 100% homogeneous distribution
  • Maximum breathability

And most importantly, we thought "body," not "bed." Our sizes follow your morphology, not mattress dimensions. Because a weighted blanket is not bed linen. It's a therapeutic accessory.

The paradox of the too-large weighted blanket

Here's what no one tells you: the larger your blanket, the less effective it is.

We know, it seems counter-intuitive. We all want a blanket that spills off the bed, that envelops everything. But that's exactly what kills the therapeutic effect.

Imagine: you weigh 65 kg. So you need about 6.5 kg of weight (the 10% rule). If you spread these 6.5 kg over a double bed of 220x240 cm, you get barely 1.2 kg/m². It's too diluted. Your body feels nothing.

But if you concentrate those same 6.5 kg over a surface of 110x160 cm (which covers only your body), you go up to 3.7 kg/m². And there, bingo. Your nervous system receives the message: "you can let go."

That's why we offer sizes designed for you, not for your mattress. Our 6 kg blanket is 110x160 cm. Each format is calibrated to stay within the scientific efficacy zone.

When aesthetics meet efficacy (finally)

We're not going to lie: we also love beauty. We love blankets that make you want to dive into them. But we refuse to choose between style and results.

Our open-knit weave is the best of both worlds. Visually, it's elegant. Refined. It looks like chunky knit. But technically, it's designed for breathability. Each stitch lets air pass through, wicks away moisture, regulates temperature.

No overheating. No night sweats. Just the right amount of weight, distributed exactly where it's needed, in cotton that truly breathes.

And unlike merino wool blankets that require dry cleaning, our Napoon blankets are machine washable at 30°. Simple. Practical. Durable.

What you need to remember before buying

Here's what we wish someone had told us before we started our research:

A chunky knit blanket is pretty. A weighted chunky knit blanket is pretty and therapeutic.

If you're looking for a decorative item to dress up your sofa, get a classic chunky knit.

But if you really want to improve your sleep, reduce your stress, feel that deep pressure that instantly calms your nervous system, then you need to go further. You need to understand that therapeutic weight is not improvised. It is calculated. It is distributed. It is stabilized.

At Napoon, we chose to do things differently. So that every gram has a precise role: to help you sleep better.

You can take our quiz to find the perfect weight and size for you. Or consult our science and benefits page to understand how it works in detail.

The real question to ask yourself

Before buying a chunky knit blanket, whether weighted or not, ask yourself this simple question: what am I really looking for?

If it's a beautiful object for your interior, go for the classic chunky knit.

But if you want to get full nights of sleep, fall asleep without tossing and turning for 45 minutes, and wake up truly rested, then you need to go further. You need to understand that therapeutic weight is not improvised. That it is calculated. That it is distributed. That it is stabilized.

At Napoon, we chose to do things differently. So that every gram has a precise role: to help you sleep better.

A weighted blanket is not a gadget. It's a tool to regain control over your nights. And therefore over your life.
