Natural weighted blanket: 7 buying criteria

Durée : 10 min

You're looking for a solution to finally sleep better. You see an ad: "100% natural, soothing, eco-friendly weighted blanket." It looks perfect. You add it to your cart. Click. Order confirmed.

Three weeks later, the blanket arrives. It's heavy, that's for sure. The fabric is a bit scratchy. And most importantly, it sounds like maracas every time you move. The plastic beads inside noisily shift from one side to the other.

You reread the description: "100% natural." Really? Because polypropylene beads are plastic derived from petroleum. Natural, that?

Today, we're telling you everything. The real certifications that matter. The materials hidden behind the pretty labels. And most importantly, how not to be fooled by empty promises that cost you a lot without providing anything.

Because a weighted blanket that really works exists. But you still need to know how to recognize it.

Criterion No. 1: The kg/m² ratio, not just the total weight

We start with the criterion that many completely ignore. You'll see, it's the one that changes everything.

A 7 kg weighted blanket is good. But 7 kg spread over how much surface? Because that's where it all matters.

If these 7 kg are spread over a 220x240 cm blanket, you get a density of 1.32 kg/m². That's too diluted. Your body feels almost nothing. The therapeutic effect is close to zero.

But if these same 7 kg are concentrated on 120x170 cm, you go up to 3.43 kg/m². And then, magic: your nervous system receives the signal. Deep pressure is activated. Your body lets go.

At Napoon, after working with doctors and therapists, we have defined that the optimal efficacy zone is between 3.1 and 4.6 kg/m². Below that, it's placebo. Above that, it's overwhelming.

At Napoon, all our sizes respect this ratio. Each format is scientifically calibrated.

Why doesn't anyone talk about this? Because it's more complicated to explain than "buy 7 kg for 70 kg of body weight." But the truth is, without the right ratio, you're just buying a heavy blanket. Not an effective weighted blanket.

Criterion No. 2: Oeko-Tex, GOTS... deciphering certifications

Let's talk frankly about labels. Because "100% cotton" on a label means absolutely nothing if the cotton has been bleached with chlorine and dyed with toxic products.

Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certification is the minimum base. It guarantees that the finished product does not contain harmful substances for your health. No heavy metals, no formaldehyde, no residual pesticides. It is tested by independent laboratories. It is checked every year.

But beware: Oeko-Tex says nothing about working conditions, nor about the environmental impact of production. It is purely sanitary. A fabric can be Oeko-Tex and have been manufactured under catastrophic conditions.

The BCI (Better Cotton Initiative) label promotes measurable improvements in the main environmental and social impacts of cotton cultivation worldwide. It aims to make this cultivation more economically, environmentally, and socially sustainable.

It is the most comprehensive label. But it is also the most expensive for manufacturers to obtain. Result: few weighted blankets are Oeko-Tex and BCI certified.

At Napoon, we chose Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certified cotton, inside AND out. No compromises. No cheap synthetic fabric on one side "to cut costs." Cotton everywhere.

A tip to check: each Oeko-Tex certification has a unique identification number. You can verify it on the official Oeko-Tex website. If the brand refuses to give you this number, run. It's probably greenwashing.

Criterion No. 3: Zero plastic beads (and here's why)

We're going to tell you something the industry prefers to keep quiet.

Every week, we ingest about 5 grams of microplastics. The equivalent of a credit card. These particles come from everywhere: bottled water, synthetic clothing, household dust... and also everyday objects.

Weighted blankets filled with plastic beads (polypropylene, polyethylene) pose two major problems.

First problem: these beads fragment over time. With each wash, with each rubbing, microparticles detach. They pass into the water, into the air of your room, onto your skin. A 2024 study published in the journal PNAS detected up to 240,000 plastic fragments per liter of analyzed water. These nanoplastics cross physiological barriers. They are found in the blood, in the placenta of pregnant women, even in the brain.

Second problem: these beads are often manufactured without clear traceability of the additives used. Phthalates, bisphenols, flame retardants... These substances can represent up to 80% of the plastic material. And they migrate. Especially when the blanket heats up in contact with your body all night long.

The European Union also adopted in November 2023 progressive prohibition measures for microplastics in cosmetic and hygiene products. Some products have already disappeared. Others have up to 12 years to find alternatives.

At Napoon, we decided: zero beads. Neither plastic, nor glass. The weight comes solely from the weaving of dense cotton. It takes longer to produce (one day of manual crafting per blanket). It's technically more complex. But it's the only way to guarantee a 100% natural product that remains so over time.

Because "natural" should mean: no petroleum, no plastic, no dubious additives. Not just a pretty marketing promise.

Criterion No. 4: Breathability (or how not to cook under your blanket)

Here's a simple equation: weighted blanket + poor breathability = hellish nights.

Many weighted blankets use polyester or minky (an ultra-soft but impermeable synthetic fabric). Why? Because it's cheaper than cotton. And because it better hides the beads inside.

The problem: these materials don't breathe. They trap heat and humidity. You sweat. You wake up drenched at 4 AM. You push the blanket away. And then, all the therapeutic effect vanishes.

Cotton, on the other hand, is naturally thermoregulating. It absorbs moisture (up to 20% of its weight) and gradually releases it. It allows air to circulate. You stay cool in summer, warm in winter.

But not all cottons are equal. Tightly woven sateen cotton will be smoother and cooler to the touch. Jersey cotton will be more stretchable. Open-weave braided cotton will be maximally breathable.

It's the latter that we chose at Napoon. Our manual braiding creates spaces between the stitches. Air circulates. Heat dissipates. Even in the middle of summer, even if you naturally get hot at night, the blanket remains bearable.

We've had feedback from customers who told us: "The duvet is very pleasant during the summer!"

That's exactly the goal. A weighted blanket that provides deep pressure without the sauna effect.

Criterion No. 5: Weight stability (the invisible but decisive criterion)

Imagine you're sleeping peacefully. You turn over. And then: CLICK CLICK CLICK. The beads all suddenly shift to the bottom of the blanket. Part of your body has nothing anymore. The other part is crushed under the weight.

This is the nightmare of beaded blankets. And no one tells you about it before you buy.

The principle of Deep Pressure Stimulation is constant, uniform, stable pressure. If the weight moves, if areas empty out, the therapeutic effect disappears. Your nervous system no longer receives a clear signal. You don't calm down.

Manufacturers try to limit this problem by sewing small squares (often 10x10 cm or 15x15 cm) to compartmentalize the beads. But that's not enough. The beads still slide around in each square. They clump in the corners. Over time, some squares become almost completely empty.

Our solution: a continuous weave where every gram of weight is integrated into the very structure of the fabric. Nothing moves. Ever. You can shake the blanket in all directions, wash it 50 times, the weight stays exactly where it should be.

This is what makes a 6 kg Napoon blanket remain effective in the long term. No loss of effectiveness. No bad surprises.

Criterion No. 6: The size adapted to YOUR body (not your bed)

We're going to debunk a stubborn myth: a weighted blanket should NOT cover your entire bed.

It's counter-intuitive, we know. We're all used to king-size duvets that hang everywhere. But a weighted blanket is not bed linen. It's a therapeutic tool.

Its effectiveness is based on a simple principle: concentrate the weight on your body, not on the mattress. If the blanket hangs over the sides of the bed, the weight pulls downwards. This creates tension in your shoulders, your neck. You wake up with aches.

The right size is the one that covers your body, no more. From your shoulders to your ankles. No need for it to touch the floor. No need for it to hang off the bed.

At Napoon, we've created a sizing system based on weight. Our quiz helps you find the right combination. You enter your weight and preferences. We recommend the optimal format.

For example: if you weigh 55 kg, we'll guide you towards our 5 kg. If you weigh 65 kg, it will be the 6 kg.

It's accessible bespoke. Not industrial standard where everyone buys 150x200 cm "because it's a classic size."

And for couples? We strongly recommend two individual blankets rather than one large one. Everyone has their adapted weight, their ideal temperature, their nocturnal movements. With two separate blankets, everyone sleeps better. It's proven.

Criterion No. 7: Maintenance

Last criterion, and not least: can you wash it easily?

Many weighted blankets with glass or plastic beads cannot be machine washed. Too heavy. Too fragile. Risk of beads breaking or tearing the fabric. Result: hand wash only, or dry cleaning.

Without regular washing, dust mites settle in. Dead skin accumulates. Body odors get embedded. After a few weeks, your "soothing" blanket just becomes disgusting.

At Napoon, our 5kg to 6kg blankets are designed to be machine washable. most of our blankets can be machine washed at 30°C, cotton cycle. A 6kg dry blanket is already heavy. Wet, it reaches +5% of its dry weight. If you have the right machine, that's perfect, otherwise it may be better to wash it (like your traditional duvet) at a laundromat.

We recommend washing once a month if you use it every day. That's more than enough to maintain impeccable hygiene.

One important thing: do not hang it to dry. The weight stretches the knit. Lay it flat on a drying rack.

And above all: never iron it. The heat from the iron loosens the weave. It damages the structure. In any case, a braided blanket doesn't need to be ironed. It's meant to have an artisanal, natural look.

The trap of "removable covers"

We end with a point that no one mentions, but which changes everything in daily use.

Many weighted blankets are sold with removable covers. "Practical for just washing the cover!" they tell you. Except it's a trap.

Why? Because the inner cover, the one that contains the beads, is never washed. It remains dirty. It accumulates dust mites, moisture, and odors. And after a few months, even with a clean cover, it smells bad.

Furthermore, these covers are often made of polyester or synthetic microfiber. To "protect" your blanket... with plastic. The irony is complete.

At Napoon, there's no cover. The blanket itself is fully washable. It's a homogeneous block. You wash everything. It's simpler. It's more hygienic. It's more logical.

If you still want to add warmth, you can place a light throw over it. But the blanket itself is sufficient.

What you need to do before buying

Undecided between several weighted blankets? Here's the ultimate checklist to verify:

  • Kg/m² ratio between 3.1 and 4.6 → guaranteed effectiveness
  • Oeko-Tex certification → no toxic substances
  • 100% cotton (inner AND outer) → no synthetics
  • Zero beads (plastic or glass) → no microplastics, no noise
  • Breathable weave or knit → usable all year round
  • Machine washable → easy hygiene
  • Size adapted to the body, not the bed → optimal comfort

At Napoon, we tick all 7 boxes. Not by chance. By choice. Because we refuse to sell a product we wouldn't be proud of ourselves.

Our Oeko-Tex cotton is carded, spun, woven. Then, our artisans braid it stitch by stitch for 5 hours to create this perfect density of 3.1 to 4.6 kg/m².

Each blanket is unique. Every gram counts. Every stitch has a role: to help you sleep better.
