Weighted braided blanket: efficiency behind style
Durée : 7 min
We've all been scrolling through Instagram at 11 p.m., half-closed, stumbling upon those dreamy chunky knit blankets. You know, those big knits that make you want to drop everything and curl up in them with a cup of tea. Gorgeous. Cozy. Perfectly Instagrammable.
But here's the real question that nobody's asking: does it actually work to help you sleep better? Or is it just a heavy decorative object that doesn't do anything concrete for your sleep?
The "too good to be true" syndrome
For the past few years, braided blankets have flooded our news feeds and home decor stores. These chunky knit throws, hand-knitted with kilos of XXL wool, are everywhere. We love them for their ultra-cozy feel. But let's be honest: when you pay €150 for 3 kilos of merino wool, you're mainly buying style.
Because there's a world of difference between a blanket that looks heavy and a weighted blanket that works deep within your body.
Most chunky knit blankets weigh between 2 and 4 kg for a gigantic 120x150 cm surface. Do the math: roughly 1.5 kg/m². It's pretty. It's cozy. But it's far, far from the ratio needed to activate the famous deep pressure that truly calms your nervous system.
What science says (but no one tells you)
We're not going to lie to you: weighted blankets have been the subject of serious studies for years. The Karolinska Institute in Stockholm published a study in 2020 on 120 patients suffering from insomnia. The result? 92% of weighted blanket users were in remission after 12 months. Not bad, right?
But be careful, there's a crucial detail everyone forgets: it's not the raw weight that counts, it's the density per square meter . It's exactly like spreading butter on toast. If you spread 10g of butter on a whole baguette, you won't taste anything. But if you concentrate it on a single slice, then you'll get a real flavor.
The same principle applies to weighted blankets, and that's what we at Napoon have learned. After several tests and studies, we determined that the therapeutic efficacy zone is between 3.1 and 4.6 kg/m². Below that? Placebo effect. Above that? Feeling of being crushed.
And guess what? Most of the braided blankets you see everywhere don't exceed 2 kg/m². They're too big, too spread out, too... decorative.
When marbles move, sleep suffers.
Let's talk frankly about what they don't tell you about classic weighted bead blankets. Because yes, some braided blankets do come in weighted versions, filled with glass or plastic microbeads. It seems like the perfect combination: style + therapeutic weight.
Except that in real life, these marbles have a major flaw: they move. And when they move, everything collapses.
Plastic polypellets, in particular, make noise with every movement. Not a huge amount, but enough to disturb light sleepers or those with sensory sensitivities. Glass microbeads, on the other hand, are quieter but clump together over time. The result: heavier areas on one side, empty areas on the other, and pressure that becomes completely random.
And when the weight shifts, the therapeutic effectiveness plummets.
The ideal weighted blanket should be silent. Still. Stable. Like a hug that doesn't move. That's exactly why we created Napoon differently.
Why we made the opposite choice at Napoon
Let's be frank: we could have done what everyone else did. Created beautiful braided blankets with large stitches, filled them with beads. It would have been simpler.
But we wanted something more eco-friendly and that actually worked. Not just a heavy decorative object.
So we worked with doctors and therapists to define a kg/m² ratio that truly activates deep pressure stimulation. We found our sweet spot: between 3.1 and 4.6 kg/m². Not by chance. By science.
Then, we made a radical choice: zero beads . No plastic, no glass. The weight comes solely from the braiding of Oeko-Tex® certified organic cotton, inside and out. It takes longer to produce. It's more technically complex. But it eliminates all the problems of conventional blankets:
- Zero weight displacement
- Zero noise
- Zero microplastics in your bed
- 100% even distribution
- Maximum breathability
And above all, we thought about the "body," not the "bed." Our sizes follow your body shape, not the dimensions of a mattress. Because a weighted blanket isn't bedding. It's a therapeutic accessory.
The paradox of the oversized weighted blanket
Here's what nobody tells you: the bigger your cover, the less effective it is.
We know, it seems counterintuitive. We all want a blanket that spills over the edge of the bed, that envelops everything. But that's exactly what kills the therapeutic effect.
Imagine this: you weigh 65 kg. You therefore need approximately 6.5 kg of weight (the 10% rule). If you spread this 6.5 kg over a 220x240 cm double bed, you barely get 1.2 kg/m². That's too diluted. Your body doesn't feel anything.
But if you concentrate those same 6.5 kg on a surface of 110x160 cm (which only covers your body), you increase the pressure to 3.7 kg/m². And there you have it. Your nervous system receives the message: "you can let go".
That's why we offer sizes designed for you , not your mattress. Our 6 kg blanket measures 110x160 cm. Each size is calibrated to remain within the range of scientifically effective support.
When aesthetics meet efficiency (finally)
Let's not lie: we also appreciate beauty. We love covers that make you want to dive right in. But we refuse to choose between style and quality.
Our open-knit construction offers the best of both worlds. Visually, it's elegant and refined, resembling chunky knits. But technically, it's designed for breathability. Each stitch allows air to circulate, wicks away moisture, and regulates temperature.
No overheating. No night sweats. Just the right amount of weight, distributed exactly where it's needed, in a truly breathable cotton.
And unlike merino wool blankets which require dry cleaning, our Napoon blankets are machine washable at 30°C. Simple. Practical. Durable.
Things you need to know before buying
This is what we wish we had been told before starting our research:
A braided blanket is pretty. A weighted braided blanket is both pretty and therapeutic.
If you are looking for a decorative item to dress up your sofa, choose a classic chunky knit.
But if you truly want to improve your sleep, reduce your stress, and experience that deep pressure that instantly calms your nervous system, then you combine the two. Three things need to be checked:
- The kg/m² ratio : between 3.1 and 4.6 kg/m² for a real effect
- Weight stability : no moving balls, no empty spaces
- Breathability : organic cotton, not synthetic fibers that make you sweat.
That's exactly what we offer at Napoon. Not by chance. Out of conviction.

The real question to ask
Before buying a braided blanket, whether weighted or not, ask yourself this simple question: what am I really looking for?
If it's a beautiful item for your home, go for the classic chunky knit.
But if you want to get back to full nights of sleep, to fall asleep without tossing and turning for 45 minutes, and wake up truly rested, then you need to go further. You need to understand that therapeutic weight management isn't something you can just wing. It's calculated. It's distributed. It's stabilized.
At Napoon, we've chosen to do things differently. So that every gram has a specific role: to help you sleep better.

A weighted blanket is not a gadget. It's a tool to regain control of your nights. And therefore, your life.
